I was reading about Hippos in Colombia that were Pablo Escobar's pets that now have taken over some of the waterways in Colombia and wondering what animal kills the most people in Africa. Well, the answer was the Mosquito of course but Mosquitos are not animals they are insects.
However, Hippos kill the most people in Africa and they are Mammals just like the Mammal that kills the most people in the U.S. is the Buffalo.
Why do buffaloes kill people?
Since they are a herd animal they are protected by the Buffalo Bulls who kill wolves or bears or people or anything else that gets too close to them. It's not that Buffalo have anything against humans, it's any animal or human that gets too close to their herd and their cows and their babies. Female mother Buffalo will kill too.
So, approaching any Male buffalo or female with a baby is to potentially die. The same with Hippos in Africa or Colombia now too.
- Mosquitoes: Responsible for 500,000 to over 750,000 deaths per year (via Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue).
- Snakes: Estimated 20,000–30,000 deaths annually, with the puff adder being a major threat.
- Crocodiles:Roughly 1,000 deaths per year.
- Hippopotamuses: Around 500 deaths annually, making them the deadliest large mammal.
- Elephants & Lions: Approximately 250–500 deaths each per year.
- Malaria Risk: Over 90% of global malaria deaths occur in the WHO African Region, largely affecting children under five.
- Dangerous Mammal: Despite their appearance, hippos are highly territorial and aggressive, often killing more people than lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos combined.
