I was listening to what people were saying on PBS NEWSHOUR tonight about the shootings of the children in Bend, Oregon

And the professor of a college who has studied these shootings also said parents need to lock up their guns so kids cannot use them. But, another way to prevent all this too would be to lock up the bullets some where that no one can find them like in an attic (where no one goes) or in a fishing tackle Lock box or in a safe somewhere too.

Because parents are starting to be held responsible now all over the U.S. for when this kids shoot people with their weapons if they were left unlocked and maybe loaded at the same time.

But, if you keep weapons unloaded and hide the bullets in a safe or even a lock box that you then hide then no one can shoot anyone and children cannot shoot each other or themselves by accident or on purpose.

When I was given my first .22  rifle in 1956 when I was 8 years old I was given my rifle to keep in my bedroom closet and I put the bullets up on a shelf in my bedroom. But, I was expected to protect the family with it from Varmints and people even at age 8 which was traditional for at least 400 years here in the U.S. and further back in Europe even before this. I guess boys were given knives or swords or clubs or all these things to defend themselves and their families for thousands and thousands of years too.

However, this is a world away from then here in the U.S. where 99% of the people it seems are not taught to use firearms like I was by age 8 and be accurate at 100 yards with that rifle by 10 which was traditional in the U.S. and Europe pretty much since any firearms were invented. In fact, my father was given a .22 rifle at age 6 and his younger brother 4 given a .22 pistol and his older brother was given a small caliber shot gun to go shoot Doves. However, they didn't know what they were shooting that young and brought home robins instead because they had no idea what a dove actually looked like then in the 1920s in Oregon then.

As a child I was taught to think of a firearm as a dangerous tool much like a rake or shovel or hoe (which people down through history people have killed each other with too in addition to guns. So, a gun was just another survival tool like a hatchet (for building fires), a shovel for digging up vegetables or planting them or a hoe which is used for creating furrows for planting seeds to grow.

So, a gun wasn't thought of as much  a bad thing rather it was a necessary thing more like Brakes on a car so you wouldn't die going down a hill more than anything else when I grew up.
