King George III's illness was likely a mental illness, but the exact cause is unknown. Historians have proposed many possible diagnoses, including porphyria, arsenic poisoning, and bipolar disorder.
Porphyria
  • In the 1960s, psychiatrists Ida Macalpine and Richard Hunter proposed that George III had porphyria, a metabolic disorder.

  • The diagnosis was based on historical records and the claim that other members of the House of Hanover had porphyria.

  • However, a re-examination of the medical evidence and new historical material led some to conclude that the porphyria diagnosis could no longer be supported.

    Arsenic poisoning
    • A hair analysis of George III found high levels of arsenic, which can cause poor mental health and neurological problems.
    • Arsenic was a common medicine at the time, and he might have been prescribed it for his attacks.
    Bipolar disorder
    • Some historians have proposed that George III had bipolar disorder.

  • His breakdowns often came during times of turmoil at home, such as the death of his youngest daughter.

  • He also exhibited manic symptoms, such as nonstop speech and writing.

    Other possible causes
    • Other possible causes include hypomania, which is a type of mania that's often part of bipolar disorder.
