The hazards of installing operating system updates on computers and smartphones

We own mostly apple products in my family since about 2005 when I just got too tired of my PCs crashing all the time when I least expected them to.

If an apple crashes it's really something serious usually but that almost never happens. So, I have always been happier with Apple computers since I switched from PCs to Apple products in 2005. But, software, No matter what you own is problematic because software very often is a lemon. What I mean by this is the software is often a BETA when it says otherwise and destroys often whatever you have on your Iphone or Imac or Macbook Pro laptop.

So, often I will wait a year or more to install stuff because I don't want everything destroyed by loading a new (more advanced?) operating system.

But, for example, if you want to download photos from your iPhone down to a Macbook pro or Imac you need to make sure you have the most up to date software on all devices or it won't download at all your photos. So, when I decide I want to download photos I usually take a risk and download all software I need on all devices knowing it all could blow up in my face too. But, I don't want to lose good photos on my phone of my travels of my children and friends and relatives either.

Another important thing I have discovered is to write down somewhere in a notebook or address book on paper your Apple ID for each device OR you can make the Apple ID the same for all your Apple devices (as long as you write it down in an address book on paper what that Apple ID actually is. Because you might not need it for several years. But, when you do it's really really important and if you don't put it somewhere you can find it then you are creating all sorts of problems for yourself.

Recently my updates tell me to download "mojave" but then I gave it my Apple ID for the computer in question. But then, it wanted the password for a computer we no longer have anymore which was an Imac. But, that's crazy because why would it want a password to a computer we no longer own?

But, it's also true my wife had them download all relevant information from the old Imac to the new Imac. So, that could be the problem. Then I asked my son about downloading "Mojave" and he said "Don't do it because that software crashed one of his computers which was a real headache for him to deal with and he builds desktop computers as a hobby custom made to his own designs. So, he technically really knows his stuff around computers and software.

But, I don't have that password it was asking for a computer we don't have anymore. So, I won't download "Mojave" because my son said it trashed his Apple computer.

So, round and round it goes never ending technical craziness of trying to get anything to work long term.

However, I also have a Macbook pro that still works that was made in 2009 too. So, there is longevity in some Apple products that are unbelievable too. 10 years is a long time for any computer or smartphone to last by the way, no matter what software you are running on it.
