Bubonic Plague and the Black Plague are the same and the squirrels have had it in western states for at least 40 years so far

The survivors called it the Great Pestilence. Victorian scientists dubbed it the Black Death. As far as most people are concerned, the Black Death was bubonic plague, Yersinia pestis, a flea-borne bacterial disease of rodents that jumped to humans.
end quote.

Also, squirrels have been found with Black Plague on board for over 40 years that I know of in California and most western states. It's one reason why you don't want to hand feed squirrels and go downs in ANY western State because of this because if they bite you you could get the black plague and then give it to other humans or animals.

The Black Death might not kill the squirrels because they look healthy but it would definitely kill you and your children or grandchildren if they get bit. They are carriers mostly for the Black Death or Bubonic plague and have been for at least 40 years that I know of throughout the western U.S.
