Both denial and rationalization are considered to be maladaptive

MW: Both denial and rationalization are considered to be maladaptive, meaning they don't help the individual adapt to the source of the threat. It can actually expose them to an even greater chance of whatever that threatening thing is.
In the case of the pandemic, you could become ill because if you're in denial, you're rationalizing the severity of the situation. Then you probably won't take the proper necessary precautions to protect yourself.
end partial quote from:
Why some can't accept the reality of Covid-19

Maladaptive behavior is a result of feeling a "Loss of Control" in their lives and making up fantasies (conspiracy theories) about things rather than being rational and logical and surviving the coronavirus through logic and reason.

So, denial and rationalization in relation to coronavirus often leads to death at some point in many people worldwide (either their deaths or the death of a family member or a friend). Which likely will create even worse PTSD for the survivors having lost a relative or friend worldwide.
