Pelosi: Biden Shouldn’t Debate Trump

The Democratic House speaker said the president has conducted himself in such a way that she doesn’t think Biden ‘should dignify that conversation with Donald Trump.’

HOUSE SPEAKER Nancy Pelosi of California said Thursday that she doesn't think Democratic nominee Joe Biden should debate President Donald Trump in the lead-up to the November election, arguing that the president will "belittle what the debates will be about."
"I don't think there should be any debates. I don't think that the president of the United States has comported himself in a way that has any association with truth, evidence, data and facts," Pelosi said at her weekly press conference on Capitol Hill. "I wouldn't legitimize a conversation with him nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States."
Biden and Trump are scheduled to go head -to -head in three fall debates on Sept. 29, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22. The president has pushed for a fourth as well as moving up the general timeline due to some mail-in ballots being sent out prior to the first debate, but the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates said it won't alter the number of debates or the dates.

Pelosi referenced Trump's general election debates with 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, citing one specific debate where the candidates could move freely around the stage, and Trump, at one point, was standing right behind her.
"I think what he did in 2016 was disgraceful, stalking Hillary Clinton like that," Pelosi said. "I don't think that [Biden] should dignify that conversation with Donald Trump."
The House speaker, whose comments echo some Democratic commentators who have questioned what Biden has to gain from the debates, acknowledged that she holds a different view than the Democratic nominee himself. Pelosi suggested that the nominees should appear separately and answer questions from "their own stage."
Biden, for his part, has committed to the format proposed by the commission and said repeatedly that he looks forward to debating Trump.
