Stephen Colbert ridiculed Eric Trump’s speech after the president’s son spoke at the Republican National Convention.
Colbert lampooned the younger Trump’s address on his late-night show on Tuesday night, as part of his RNC coverage.
He began by making fun of a tweet in which Trump, referring to former NFL player Herschel Walker (who also spoke at the RNC), said that Walker had “hit it out of the park tonight”.
Colbert pointed out that hitting the ball out of the park is a feat in baseball, not football.
“Eric, that’s not what they do in the NFL,” he said, before bringing back the Eric Trump impression he has performed in the past, and imagining the president’s son making references to several other sports.
Colbert then referenced a part of Trump’s speech in which he boasted about the killings of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Qasem Soleimani.
“Al-Baghdadi – dead. Soleimani – dead,” the younger Trump said.
“That sounds like a list coming,” Colbert added. “I’ll do a few more”.
He then named several other things – “democratic norms”, “170,000 Americans your father could have protected [from the coronavirus]”, and “my soul from watching these last few nights”.
Between each concept, Colbert played the brief clip of Trump saying the word “dead”.
Colbert performed his Eric Trump impression at other points during the segment, including when he imagined what words Trump might want to say to his father: “Hello, my name is Eric. It is a pleasure to meet you. Would you like a booth at the front or the back?”
The RNC will end this Thursday. Trump is scheduled to accept the Republican nomination from the White House in Washington, DC.
