add to the above: Although the search terms seem like they would be
pretty straight forward, I tried searching through Yahoo and Google and
couldn't find anything to answer my question. :( So, I posted here.

There is no way to know.
Long guns aren't registered.
There is no requirement to register any used fire arms you buy or are given.
The best you could do, is find stats dealing with known legal first buyer guns sales.
According to the Police Foundation:
There are 192 million working firearms in private possession.
128 million long guns and 64 million hand guns.

- Also, since this was 6 years ago the latest estimate since things got weird here in the U.S. starting about 2007 with the recession and all is now 300 million firearms in the U.S. at present or approximately 1 for every man, woman and child in the U.S.
