While
the Obama administration has reduced some sanctions against Iran as
part of an interim nuclear deal, it is maintaining restrictions on
purchases of oil from Tehran.
"There is a sufficient supply of petroleum and petroleum products from countries other than Iran to permit a significant reduction in the volume of petroleum and petroleum products purchased from Iran by or through foreign financial institutions," said a Friday statement by President Obama.
The U.S. and allies are working on a long-term agreement in which Iran would agree to forgo the means for making a nuclear weapon in exchange for further reductions of sanctions.
From the Associated Press:
"Secretary of State John Kerry said the determination was evidence that the U.S. will continue to enforce its oil sanctions during the next six months as it works to reach a comprehensive agreement that would prove the Iranian nuclear program is being used for peaceful purposes.
"Tehran would get relief from some other economic sanctions under terms of the deal."
