California Drought: Worst in History?

    1.  I was out walking my dogs and thinking about the coastal trees today in Northern California. They likely will be okay along the coast (survival wise) simply because fog and moisture is constantly blowing off the Pacific Ocean year around. Though there isn't the water underground to nourish them they do have Pacific Ocean moisture constantly condensing in their needles and leaves. Likely the pines will be in the best shape because pine needles tend to condense best the moisture along their needles from my point of view.

We have received almost no rain along the Northern California coast since last January a year ago. Rain received even where I live is about 1/2 of average rain fall per year.

On Jan. 3, California's Department of Water Resources released its first snow survey of the season, and the details weren't good.
    Sierra Snowpack
Animation showing the Sierra Nevada snowpack Dec. 1, 2013 to Jan. 9, 2014. After a brief expansion in early December, snowpack has decreased considerably.
According to the report, the water content of the snowpack statewide was just 20 percent of average for early January. This ties January 2012 as the driest in historical records for this time of year.
The state's mountain snowfall plays a big role in the water supply for California, particularly in the Sierra Nevada.
California's Sierra Nevada Conservancy says that 60 percent of the state's developed water supply originates from this high mountain range that runs north to south near the Nevada border. As of Jan. 8, snowpack in the Sierra was only 19 to 29 percent of average.
In early December, about 88 percent of the Sierra was covered by snow after a cold air mass brought snow to very low elevations. A month later on Jan. 9, a paltry 21.3 percent of the Sierra Nevada was covered by snow. The animation to the right shows the massive reduction in snow cover from early December to early January.
