The Tops of the Poles (telegraph) are underwater: Sacramento January 1861

All the roads in the middle of the state are impassable, so all mails are cut off. We have had no “Overland” for some weeks, so I can report no new arrivals. The telegraph also does not work clear through, but news has been coming for the last two days. In the Sacramento Valley for some distance the tops of the poles are under water!

Also, I remember reading that the water was 200 miles by 300 miles around Sacramento and to the north up towards Redding, California. He said the winds and cold muddy water in the temporary flooded lake of around 6 months as it slowly drained away into San Francisco Bay and out into the Pacific Ocean created large waves from the wind which knocked down any farm houses still standing. he also spoke of seeing when he visited Sacramento dead animals everywhere in the water that likely had been dead for up to a month at that time.

At the time it was so bad he didn't think the city of Sacramento would ever recover. But, over time it did. Many people who were wealthy enough moved to San Francisco and other above water places in the state or beyond for a time or permanently while thousands of the unlucky or poor people likely died in flooding mishaps or from diseases from poor sanitation from dead animals in water all around them in the water.

Sacramento pretty much stayed underwater and could be navigated safely only by boat for around 6 months or from January 1862 until around June, 1862.
