Phone calls and texting especially take up very little bandwidth. IN FACT, even when you can't get a phone cell phone call out in an emergency you can get a text out because of how little the bandwidth it has.
However, Data is a different story and can take up a lot of bandwidth (the amount of digital data that has to be sent and received in any given second of time)
IN fact, you can burn up loads of data just by leaving your data switch on when you aren't using it. So, be sure to turn it off when not going on the internet or playing youtube videos or movies or stuff like this on your smartphone.
This is especially problematic if you go to another country and can wind up costing you thousands of dollars if you even turn your data on once and forget to turn it off over several days. So, many people just won't take their cell phones to another country because of this. So, if you go to another country be sure to get a texting plan for that country from your provider so you can keep in contact with people at home from that country in the cheapest way (unless you are going to go to Internet cafes and email everyone at home as you travel places). However, I find that Internet cafes are often few and far between many places on earth and so a smartphone you have a texting plan with to send and receive emergency or notifications is often much more reasonable than looking for an internet cafe in the middle of the desert or on top of a mountain somewhere on earth.
However, back to just cell phone data.
Basically it operates in a similar way to how a cell phone operates and turns your phone into an Internet device by sending and receiving all types of Internet Data. However, this also makes your phone vulnerable to viruses and bots and other things that you can get on any computer from being online.
But, basically data works the same way the cell phone call does through a microwave tower closest to you. If one is available that is set up to send and receive Internet data then you can load slow or fast any internet address or even sent and receive emails or just revert to text which don't burn up data usually because they take much less bandwidth than a cell phone call does.
So, whenever you are in a wifi area that you can use you want to turn off your data completely and turn on your WIFi because then your smartphone becomes like any computer resident on that wifi wherever you are. And unless you are paying for the wifi service it is free.
