John Oliver Reminds Americans of All the Things They Lost When They Gained Independence From England
Last Week Tonight took this week off to celebrate Independence Day but not before John Oliver reminded his American audience just what the Founding Fathers gave up when they broke away from the motherland in 1776. For starters: the English accent. “These beautiful vowel sounds could have been yours,” he lamented, his own inflection a hybrid of Liverpool, Birmingham, and Bedford influences. “Instead, from sea to shining sea, you speak like you just burned your tongue on a hot apple pie.”
So what else did we trade away in exchange for sweet, sweet freedom? Bowler hats, British cuisine (ugh),
and an outlook so bleak that even the sun can’t assert itself.
“Honestly,” notes Oliver. “You’re probably way better off the way that
things are.”
Episodes of Last Week Tonight return July 24.
