Most of the last big Fires in Monterey county around Carmel and Monterey were in the 1980s

It seemed like there was a new fire almost every year and people losing homes in places like Carmel Highlands or Pebble Beach wasn't unusual then because it happened. The worst fire that burned down many homes on the ridge in Pebble Beach was about the time "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out. I remember we were visiting the CAlifornia theater in Monterey then and when we came out from watching "Raiders of the lost Ark, the ridge above Pebble beach and Skyline Forest was all on fire higher than the tallest trees. It was pretty scary to see this at the time with my older children. We then were visiting the area from Mt. Shasta and were pretty awestruck to see this at the time. The older kids now are 42 to 45 years of age because this is a long time ago then. But, fires and flooding a lot seemed to be a lot more common in the 1980s and 1990s than they have been since around 2000 for the whole area from San Francisco to Big Sur. The Carmel River I don't remember flooding the Crossroads shopping center like it did in 1995 which I believe was the year the floods picked up a cement bridge on Highway 1 and threw it a mile out into the ocean which to me is still unbelievable it could have actually done this then but somehow it did. This is the old bridge over Carmel River on Highway 1. It took them about a month or two to build another bridge. This was a very great Hardship for people who lived south of the bridge in places like Carmel Highlands, Palo Colorado Canyon and Big Sur because there were no paved roads out except highway 1 to the north then.
