Critic Reviews for Ghostbusters

This is a mediocre horror/comedy that deserves neither high praise nor disparagement.

As is so often the case with special-effects-heavy movies, the character comedy quickly gets trampled by the effects (in this case, not special).

In her wily line delivery and cocksure swagger, McKinnon resembles nothing if not a young Bill Murray. Through her thick goggles is the impish spark that keeps movies like this in orbit.

These women are having fun just being together and getting to don matching jumpsuits and whale on undead spirits, and their evident joy makes us happy to hop in the hearse for a ride-along.

How will the reboot be remembered a couple of decades down the line? Not as beloved, or beloathed; more likely as beliked, if it's remembered at all.

The colorful new version isn't unfaithful to the source material's mythology. It's a fun, true-blue update of a classic.

While its gags may be hit & miss and dependant heavily on short-stint cameos and nostalgia of the original, the reboot blasts enough for a likeable summer blockbuster. Ghostbusters' new generation take is obviously a visual treat and spectacle led by the star-studded female-driven squad; though not as impressive as the 1984 version it's still fairly entertaining. 3.5/5

The movie the internet loves to hate turned out to actually be pretty entertaining. I dug the story and the new cast pretty well and even the action sequences were really well done and did things that the original movie couldn't due to effect constraints of the time. The only parts I really disliked involved the Kevin character. It really felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted him to be just a little dumb or basically an asshole. Over all a good start to a possible future franchise. I look forward to more.

Ghostbusters is a largely uninspired take on a well known property. The story scores points for changing up the plot at least. Like a remix of a classic song with a new singer and modern production, it entertains based on familiarity but not through excellence or innovation. Ok so Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth are amusing, but the script hangs the rest of the cast out to dry. In lieu of a Sumerian deity from another dimension brought back from the dead, there is a nerdy petulant weirdo (Neil Casey). He is a weak excuse for the main villain. Humor is subjective, but I rarely laughed and that's a deal breaker when assessing a comedy. This cacophonous spectacle wants it both ways. Embrace a modern take, while constantly reminding you of nostalgia for the 1984 original. Star cameos abound with Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts all in conspicuous bits that distract from, rather than add to the narrative. The idea of a summer blockbuster that headlines 4 women celebrated for their witty minds, and not their physical attributes, is exciting in theory. I so very wanted this movie to be spectacular. Instead it's just barely acceptable. fastfilmreviews.com
