As the Soberanes Fire rages along the
coast from Carmel Highlands in the north to Palo Colorado in the south,
a power outage has darkened much of Big Sur.
The outage extends from Malpaso Creek in the north to the Esalen Institute in the south, a distance of about 60 miles.
The power went out at 7:12pm, according to Pacific Gas & Electric, affecting about 1,100 customers.
As of 8pm, PG&E reported that they are unable to access the affected equipment to make repairs.
Around 3pm Saturday afternoon, a PG&E worker checked in at Cal Fire's emergency communications station just south of Garrapata State Park on Highway 1 to notify fire officials about his plans to remove brush from a PG&E substation near Palo Colorado.
