I was a SCUBA diver since 1962 when I was 14 I believe
Somewhere I have my "JUNIOR" divers license that I got from the Brauer brothers who then in 1962 had a program on TV in Los Angeles called I believe "Territory Underwater" or something like that. For $25 they taught you to SCUBA dive and I could also get a license as long as my father or a relative got one alongside of me. I was working for my father that summer so I saved money and paid both for him and me to get certified for $25 which also included a "Graduation Dive" at Catalina Island. So, I remember diving down to about 50 feet on my first ocean dive and going down the Anchor chain because my father got sea sick and never went Scuba Diving that day. So, they put me as a "Buddy" with an older guy who immediately took his spear gun into a cave and then came swimming out scared at about 50 feet deep too. So, I went into the cave when he came swimming scared out because I was 12 and curious and absolutely fearless then like many young men of my time. Soon, I swam out scared too by the Moray Eel which was about a foot width and 8 feet long and when it breathed water it looked like it was threatening me. But, later I found out he was just guarding his lobsters that my "Buddy" was hunting for too. Because there were a lot of them then at Catalina then in 1962. So, this was my first Scuba diving experience and likely maybe the best Scuba experience in the Ocean I ever had. I remember sitting on the bottom where the anchor of the dive boat was and looking up and it was sort of like the boat's bottom was about the level of the top or higher of a telephone pole top which was also a strange experience too. Then I guy had a bad regulator connection so it was leaking because it had been cross threaded onto the tank. I pointed the problem out to him and he quickly went back up and changed tanks because his tank had almost already bubbled out of the two stage double hose (1962) regulator on his SCUBA tank. So, the novice ocean adult diver actually lived through the experience because I pointed out the problem to him so he didn't run out of air suddenly at 50 feet from it all leaking out so fast.
