It's likely:

That Iran has one or more nuclear weapons purchased from North Korea or will have one or more soon.

The same thing is true of Saudi Arabia.

What caused this change of events?

In regard to Saudi Arabia the blowing up of their main refineries by Iran.

In the case of Iran, the killing of Qasem Soleimani

Also, any country that doesn't want people to know that it has nuclear weapons likely won't tell other countries about them until they are going to use them. Then the use of them would tell people that they have them. This would be true of both Saudi Arabia and Iran by the way. Because these two countries are very likely to nuke each other some day. I would say it's about 90% at least at this point that that will happen one day. To a much lesser degree this is true of India and Pakistan as well. So, there are at least two nuclear wars somewhere on the horizon likely at some point. The reason it is lessened for India and Pakistan is that it hasn't happened yet. India's first nuclear weapons were built between 1988 and 1990. And Pakistan 1998. So, they haven't nuked each other yet. The longer the wait is the less likely it will happen (theoretically).

This is the harsh reality we all live with today that:

Israel
France
England
Pakistan
India
China
Russia
and the U.S.

All have nuclear weapons.

And Russia and the U.S. each have enough nuclear weapons to blow the whole world out of existence 12 times or more into an asteroid belt like the one out past Mars. This is likely also true of China.

So, on one level it isn't surprising that more nations want nuclear weapons because then they can all say: "IF you bother me I will end the Earth and the whole human race and everything living upon it."

But, right now, every nation that has nuclear weapons can say this to one degree or another already.

This is also why the Security Council of the United Nations is composed of nations with nuclear weapons.

All the permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations have nuclear weapons.

The Council is composed of 15 Members: Five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly (with end of term year):
