Throughout my life I have been very lucky to meet amazing people in California, Oregon, Washington, India and Nepal and in all the states and countries I have visited during my life.
One of these many realizations took place in the 1980s when I came out of a sweat Lodge run by Charlie Thom a traditional Karuk Medicine man tutored by his grandparents to become a medicine man in the traditional ways and we were above Lake Siskiyou where one of the Tributaries of the Sacramento River flows into Lake Siskiyou on it's way to Shasta Lake and Dam 40 or 50 miles towards Redding.
I walked out of the sweat lodge in the "Spins" that you get which is sort of like a mild vertigo you get from the extreme heat of a sweat lodge and I went into the river there to cool down between Sweat lodge Rounds. There are usually 3 or 4 or more Rounds in the Sweat Lodge for most people who chose this outcome.
I lay there after letting the river cool me down in the 1980s and the Rock People began speaking to me:
They said: "We are your bones The water your blood Your Breath the Sky"
At this point I cried at the profound nature of this realization it went so deep.
They were telling me I was kindred with all of the earth and all of the rocks and mountains and water on earth and that my breath was as big as the sky itself surrounding earth.
It was likely the most profound single thing that the Rock people have shared with me during my life making me realize they all were my family along with the water and the air itself surrounding this planet.
I felt more at home that moment and accepted by the Earth and Rock people and the Water people and the Air people than likely ever before that moment in my life.
