I still have my KLR 650 that I bought new in 2009

A KLR 650 is a very simple machine and easy to repair (unlike the BMW 650 and 1200s motorcyles). They are much more complicated and a KLR 650 is easier to obtain parts if you are riding through Russia and Siberia and China with one.

I watched the series "Long Way Round" with Ewan McGregor and his friend and bought the bike thinking I might do something like this. But, the reality of the situation was that I was already 61 in 2009 so this wasn't really practical for me to do at that age anymore.

I had the suspension strengthened because I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall and needed more suspension than it had. But, other than that I left it stock. But, a KLR 650 is about 380 to 400 pounds unloaded so you don't really want to be jumping a bike this big. But, it can go forever at around 65 or 70 mph and because they come with knobby tires they can negotiate almost any dirt or rock road no matter how steep if you are a good enough rider to do that.

So, I have really enjoyed my 2009 KLR 650 and it still sits in my garage and still looks pretty much brand new even though it's 12 or 13 years old now. I have ridden it all around Mt. Shasta when I rented a U-Haul motorcycle trailer and hauled it up there in 2010 when we rented a house on Lake Siskiyou the month of July and watched the fireworks over the lake on 4th of July there.

Make sure you can lift a bike this big if it falls down before you buy something like this or else you will have to buy a jack to jack it up and put the jack in a saddle bag or bungee cord it to the back rack behind the rear seat

This is what my motorcycle actually looks like:
