I think this is coming just because robots don't have to ever die as long as they have replacement parts.
I think robotic and human immortality likely will go hand in hand because of this kind of thinking.
What is starting now with teeth implants and hip and knee and joint replacements eventually will lead to the possible replacement of all organs in the body including the skin covering the surface of a body which is an organ too.
So, how can a robot self design more evolved versions of itself?
It would have to likely say to itself: "I will always know what next to do" and then accept this.
What is interesting is this is what humans should likely tell themselves too to bring up useful ideas of creating themselves up out of their subconscious minds to reinvent themselves at all stages of life ongoing.
The main preparation for human immortality here on earth or beyond earth is psychological. You might think the main obstacle to human immortality is physical but no that's not it. The main barrier is psychological actually.
Once you psychologically prepare for human immortality then you can get busy on creating that immortality one replacement part at a time.
It's like any problem in life.
If you ask a question and put it out on the Internet you have potentially 8 billion people now to help you answer any question you pose.
So, asking the right questions automatically eventually creates the right answers to those questions.
