What appears to be happening is that many Russians know how bad what is happening in Ukraine. However, they don't want to be killed or tortured or imprisoned in Russia for acknowledging what they know is actually going on there. This is what appears to be happening now. So, this is a part of the disconnect because of what they have to tell their relatives on the phone in Ukraine.
So, as more and more Russians realize how bad what is happening in Ukraine actually is it's hard to say how things will or won't change in Russia. Mostly it appears they just don't want to be killed or imprisoned for what they know is actually going on in Ukraine.
