The prevalence of these weapons means police sometimes are overmatched, as we saw with the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last month. In a situation where you have small children near the shooter, you want to remove the threat as quickly as possible.
But we all saw the tragic consequences at that elementary school, where police waited for more than an hour before engaging with the teenage gunman armed with an AR-15 who killed 19 young children and two teachers.

IF the senior police commander of Uvalde had sent his men in before he did likely they all would have died because they were simply outgunned likely only having 9 mm handguns or .45 pistols.
This is what the press isn't saying about this situation. The commander knew all his men would die without Assault weapons which they did not have at the time.
Swat Teams are often allowed AR-15s but as a general rule police departments don't allow regular police to have more than a handgun because it just isn't a good idea in most domestic situations.
