I first got Whats APP for free calls and texts to my children overseas. The advantage also beyond this service being free is that the calls and texts are also encrypted so other people cannot see or hear.
However, then Facebook bought Whats App and then my daughter didn't like Whats app because they regulary sell private users information. This left only Signal which would protect users privacy through encryption. So, the only place I might trust to continue to encrypt all your phone calls messages and pictures at least at this point is probably Signal.
However, I think because the Chinese hacking is so pervasive and cannot easily be solved (maybe ever) you might see many more encrypted services as more people become aware of this problem. IF you don't want all your conversations and texts and pictures to wind up in China with the military there looking at them you might start with Signal Or if you are feeling really lucky Whats APP.
However, then you have to get all your friends and relatives to actually get and use What's APP or Signal too or both?
Because you can only call or text other people that are on these services. So, you have to get everyone on board that doesn't want all their phone calls and texts to be listened to or watched by the Chinese Military or Chinese Government officials.
