The reason I'm asking this is my father was looking forward to retirement and then basically died of loneliness in the form of Prostate Cancer that metasticised to bone cancer because he wouldn't use a medical procedure in 1980 which was then having his prostate removed. So, he died within 5 years of this diagnosis.
I think he basically died of pride and it's true my father was a very proud man and this I think was his undoing. Also, he was a known workaholic so basically retirement was literally suicide for him. He couldn't live without other male tradesmen around to entertain. However, he had never studied psychology like I had to understand himself like I do. So, even though he was valedictorian of his senior class in High school which is one reason why he was so proud. Also, because he was so brilliant intellectually he was always saving people's lives who listened to him regarding things like Diet or putting people on watermelon fasts which is a way of going 30 days on only Organic Watermelon to avoid open heart surgery. (This actually works by the way) or you can do ONLY brown rice for 6 months which does the same thing.
The point is I was suited for retirement and he was not.
What is the biggest potential problem regarding retirement?
I would say, "Having enough money to comfortably retire."
Also, if you are alone that could be a problem for some people too.
However, for me, it's wonderful because I have my wife of 30 years (living together now 31 years) and I have three biological children and an adopted daughter and now all of my children are either married with children or living with their boyfriend for my youngest daughter who is about 30 now.
So, for me, my wife is brilliant like my Dad was and so is very interesting to me because she has 2 bachelor's degrees and a Master's degree in Business and she reminds me of my father a lot so we get along great as friends after 31 years together.
Also, i'm more in the moment and much more calm in general than she is. And she is a planner who plans everything weeks or months or years before she does things.
But, we both are really great and calm in a real crisis regarding our children or grandchildren or friends.
Both of us are really great in Crises. So, we are friends and we can be firemen in a crisis for our families and friends.
So, for us, retirement really works!
But, you have to have all your ducks in a row so to speak for things to work out this way.
Otherwise, retirement can lead to one dying through overeating or drinking alcohol or psychological problems or drugs of various kinds.
So don't retire if you are not self disciplined enough to stay alive being retired.
This is where you should start regarding retirement planning.
This is what retirement actually is:
IT IS THE BEST AND THE WORST THING THAT EVER WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IN LIFE!
If you think it is anything else then maybe you shouldn't be retired.
However, the thing it reminds me the most of is a never ending Christmas and Easter and Summer vacation.
IT NEVER ENDS UNTIL YOU DIE!
This is what it is really like (AN INFINITELY LONG VACATION).
If you don't like the idea of an infinitely long vacation that might take you all over the world then maybe you shouldn't retire?
But, if an infinitely long vacation intrigues you maybe you ARE suited for retirement.
I'm a very creative person and I never run out of ideas for fun things to do traveling the world and meeting friends and family and meeting people everywhere I go.
So, happy Retirement!
By God's Grace
