I wondered why our dog was barking. I found out when we took her outside to do her business late at night. As I walked out into the backyard I could smell a skunk nearby but not pungent enough for the dog and I to be in danger of getting skunked (sprayed). I understood why she was barking then because she can sense the skunk in the neighborhood.
However, I had her on a leash so even if they skunk came near I likely could pull her away because often dogs who don't have leashes on become blind when they are skunked if their owners cannot wash their eyes out from the skunk spray.
So, anyway you look at it our dog and I were lucky tonight and the skunk was likely in the Green Belt of Pine Trees and Boulders that is between our houses in the Green Belt because we live in a pine forest with a few Redwoods in it too and oak trees and Manzinita bushes and Bracken Ferns here on the northern California coast of California.
