I was watching the 2nd in a series of "Pirates of the Caribbean movies" "Dead man's chest" and was wondering if I was right in thinking Rum was made out of Sugar cane like Vodka is made out of Potatoes? I was right.

Key Ingredients & Process:
- Sugarcane Source:
- Molasses: The thick syrup left after sugar crystals are removed; most common for traditional rum.
- Fresh Sugarcane Juice: Used for rhum agricole, offering a more vegetal flavor.
- Other cane products like sugar, syrup, or panela can also be used.
- Fermentation: Yeast is added to the sugarcane product (molasses or juice) and water, converting the sugars into alcohol.
- Distillation: The fermented liquid (wash) is heated in stills (pot or column) to separate and concentrate the alcohol, removing impurities.
- Aging (Optional but Common): The clear distillate is aged in oak barrels (like bourbon casks) for darker rums, or in stainless steel tanks for lighter ones, influencing the final color and taste.
- Finishing: Some mass-produced rums add sugar or caramel coloring after distillation for sweetness and color, notes John Paul Jones, but traditional methods rely on the natural process.
