Ornithopter?

 begin quotes:

An
ornithopter is an aircraft that achieves flight by flapping its wings to generate both lift and thrust, mimicking birds, bats, and insects. Conceptually designed by Leonardo da Vinci in the 15th century, functional models were developed in the 1800s, with successful, albeit limited, manned flights emerging later. They offer potential for high-efficiency, agile flight and superior hovering, though they face challenges with mechanical complexity, structural durability, and power requirements.

How an Ornithopter Works
Ornithopters use flapping wings to create thrust and lift, rather than a propeller.
  • Wing Motion: The wings move in a plunging (up/down) and pitching (twisting) motion.
  • Lift and Thrust: The inner wing generates lift, while the outer wing provides thrust, similar to a bird's flight mechanics.
  • Power Sources: They can be powered by rubber bands (small models), electric motors, or human muscles.
Advantages
  • Efficiency: Potential for superior aerodynamic efficiency at small scales compared to fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Agility: Ability to hover and maneuver in restricted spaces, ideal for nature observation or surveillance.
  • Bio-mimicry: Effective for studying or mimicking insect/bird flight mechanics.
Limitations
  • Mechanical Complexity: The intricate, moving joints required for flapping are prone to failure and wear.
  • Power Density: Large-scale, manned flight requires immense, often impractical, amounts of energy to flap large wings.
  • Structural Stress: The constant bending and twisting of wings place high stress on materials.
Applications
  • Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs): Ideal for surveillance, reconnaissance, and environmental monitoring due to their small size and quiet operation.
  • Toys and Education: Used as hobbyist models to demonstrate biological flight principles.
  • Research: Used in aerodynamic studies of flapping flight.
  • Fiction/Entertainment: Popularized in media like Dune for agile, multi-winged aircraft.

A flapping-wing drone! 🦅 It's an ornithopter with a six-axis gyro and precision G-sensors designed specifically to deal with the chaotic dynamics of wing flapping. Sensor fusion tuned for flapping flight, not propeller stability. Ultra-light motors and custom kinematics. Biomimetic wings that alternate between flapping and gliding. Instead of forcing nature into quadcopter physics, they designed the control system around how birds actually fly. The challenge with ornithopters is vibration. Propeller drones spin at constant speed, so the control system can filter out predictable oscillations. Flapping wings create violent, asymmetric vibrations every stroke cycle. Standard IMUs designed for quadcopters can't tell the difference between intentional movement and wing-induced noise. BionicBird solved this by tuning the sensor fusion specifically for flapping flight. The control system knows what vibrations to expect from the wings and filters them out, leaving only the meaningf

The ornithopter is an aircraft designed to fly by mimicking the flapping wings of birds or insects, a concept explored for centuries. Early ideas date back to the late 15th century, when Leonardo da Vinci sketched human-powered designs, though they were never successfully flown. Unlike traditional aircraft, ornithopters generate both lift and thrust through wing movement, requiring complex mechanics and precise aerodynamic control. In modern times, engineers have built small drones, remote-controlled models, and experimental full-scale versions that have achieved limited flight using engines or human power.

[Dune] So, why do we even bother with ornithopters?
Popular comment · Spotters and cary-alls are civilian ships that need to loiter in one place for long periods of time and don't need to move fast. They move heavy cargo and watch for worm-sign. Ornithopters are generally royal/military equipment which they use to get somewhere fast and possibly engage in dogfights. Endurance is less a priority than speed and agility. Also, caryy-alls and spotters were designed specifically for Arrakis, where they need them. They may have similar/exact same ships on other planets which also need to carry heavy cargo or be loitering scouts, but they're probably designed differently. They probably have something similar on Caladan, but designed to withstand the environmental damage of rain, rather than the environemntal problems of the dessert. Ornithopters are an all-purpose aircraft common throughout the Imperium. They're mentioned multiple times in the books (I know you asked about the movies) in different situations other than on Arrakis.

Ornithopter question
Popular comment · Holtzmann effect (which underlies repulsors, shields, a few other things) tends to drive Sandworms into a murderous, frenzied rampage, orders of magnitude worse than what rhythmic vibration gets anywhere close to. So using such things inside the Shield Wall is fine, but in the Deep Desert, it's dangerous as hell (though less so if you stay off the sand).
