For example, when I first learned HTML there were not Auto-encoders available to me in June of 1999. So, learning HTML was the only way I had to program my first site at geocities.com then. And since I started here at Blogspot (blogger.com) I still use HTML to encode Links pages so you can see what the most people are reading in whatever period (usually 7 days) for my links pages that people are reading the most article in.
I think learning HTML for me was helpful at the time because it is the basis of the internet (as far as web pages being created even though there are deeper levels of programming to send information around the world too. (like TCP-IP) (Transfer control protocol and Internet protocol) which operates at a deeper level transmitting everything all over the world than HTML does which is more user friendly for building web pages.
So, there are all these different levels on up from zeros and ones through TCP-IP before you get to an internet programming language like HTML and all the other compatible languages like Java and others.
