First of all, all you need is a guide unless you want porters to carry all your stuff and gear up to 9000 or 10,000 feet in elevation from the river there.
Also, the road to Lhasa from Kathmandu is still closed to international travelers since the earthquake.
One of the many reasons for htis is that in 1985 in Bodhgaya I spoke with my friend Vincent cooper who usually spent 6 months of the year in Asia (especially India and Nepal and Thailand after fishing for 6 months in Alaska on a fishing boat every year then. What he said when he took a bus to Lhasa form Kathmandu, Nepal was that he came upon a frozen to death busload of people there on the 20,000 foot pass over to Lhasa over the Himalayas then. Because of this experience of his I decided not to take my family over to Lhasa at that time in 1986 as a result. Instead we did the Helambu Trek deep into the Himalayas and stayed at Sherpa Hotels and the aunt of our Guide who took us to visit Tarke Ghyang where it snowed on us there which was interesting too where there were no roads for 20 miles or more then. There were just trails and Suspension Bridges and that's all then there.
