Zelensky begins speech by agreeing with Trump’s call to end war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky began his speech at the UN by quoting approvingly from a social media post from US President Donald Trump about Russia’s diesel woes.

“This morning on my way to New York, somewhere in the sky over the big and beautiful Atlantic Ocean, I read President Trump’s post on Truth Social,” Zelensky said. “The president wrote that Russia has lost control of its diesel oil industry due to its war with Ukraine, and it is hard to imagine a more humiliating loss for a country that has a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and takes so much pride in its oil exports.”

The war with Iran has caused the price of diesel to soar this year, reaching the largest annual increase since AAA began tracking prices in 2000. At the same time, Ukrainian attacks on Russian fuel targets have caused Russia – the largest exporter of diesel fuel behind the US – to halt diesel exports.

Trump earlier this month blamed Zelensky for causing a diesel shortage by attacking Russian fuel infrastructure, then claimed that Ukraine had agreed to cease attacks on Russian fuel targets so long as Russia does the same with Ukraine. Zelensky later described the arrangement as a proposal, rather than an agreement to stop targeting diesel infrastructure.

Trump on Monday mentioned Russian diesel again, writing that the Russian fuel industry’s losses are another reason why the “ridiculous and never ending war with Ukraine must be ended.”

Zelensky agreed with Trump’s sentiment, adding: “I do not know a single world leader who would say otherwise.”
