Recently studies were made about going from poor to rich in America and though it is possible it is no longer as likely that one can succeed at this as before up to about 2000 AD. Why?
Because during the Clinton Administration the last vestiges of the social programs necessary to succeed from being poor were dismantled.
So, the truth now is that if you are Canadian there are still enough social programs to make it possible to succeed if you are poor and a hard worker in both college and work. However, this is not as true as it once was if you are a poor American because of the dismantling of the necessary programs for you not to be destroyed by Student loans and debt on your way to success.
So, the major obstacle at present to succeeding while being poor is student loans which more than anything will destroy your chances of ever being a success here in the U.S.
This is not to say it cannot be done, it is just much less likely now than before 2000 AD.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
