(09-09) 19:53 PDT SAN BRUNO -- A huge explosion - possibly from a gas line - rocked San Bruno shortly after 6 p.m. today, sending up a massive, smoky fireball seen for miles and igniting a blaze that gobbled up at least a dozen houses in a densely populated neighborhood.
Several structures and thick stands of trees in the neighborhood near Skyline Boulevard and San Bruno Drive are still engulfed in a blaze that appears to be being fed by a continuous source of fuel. A San Bruno police dispatcher said she did not know what had exploded. A local fire chief told Channel 5 television he believes the fire was caused by a "high pressure gas line." which is about 24 inches in diameter

As I write this I'm watching live coverage on ABC News San Francisco. It said in the TV coverage they believe a 24 inch natural gas line exploded and took out at least a dozen or more houses to begin with. The ensuing fires have destroyed 35 or more homes since then about 2 hours now ago. Only helicopters can be used with buckets as far as air drops during the night and only those with night vision goggles equiped. Air tankers won't be able to drop fire retardant until daybreak. I haven't seen a disaster like this in Northern California since the really bad Oakland fire years ago and the quake of 1989. This is a very big and serious disaster and it is not over.
The winds are blowing 21 mph but the temperature is presently 61 degrees Fahrenheit at 8:49 pm and partly cloudy. The winds are a problem but the temperature is not.
