I was thinking about this today as I watched a PBS Newshour segment talking about this. For example, if data on an individual of either a Republican or a Democrat were compromised, a foreign country might wage war on a particular individual or political party within the U.S. For example, the FEC hacking by China while the government shutdown was occurring because there were no IT Staff available to fix the problem because they had all been laid off by the shutdown. So, they had to wait a week or more to fix their internet problems caused by this which could cause eventually unknown problems into the future by (Back door) types of viruses and other malware not yet discovered by the FEC like a Trojan Horse type of malware or others even more sophisticated.
So, what the NSA has been doing could be potentially lethal when or as other nations gather specific information to blackmail or kill individual U.S. citizens or whole families here in this country. So, the U.S. gathering this information, if another country got a hold of it could cost U.S. lives directly or indirectly. And the hacking of the Federal Election Commission already might have caused one or more elections to be inaccurate in the near or far future including the U.S. Presidency, with no one realizing it already. For example, what if the Chinese (who might want Democrats rather than Republicans in Office because they are (possibly) less likely to be militaristic against China) what if the Chinese put false counters for Republican election sites to discount Republican Votes to make the U.S. more docile and possibly more friendly and less angry towards them?
The Internet might be a tool a country might use to attempt to defeat this or any nation without firing a shot. The Internet is potentially dangerous to the survival of all democracies on earth.
Because the Internet would be much easier to subvert by a Dictatorship against any Democracy than anything I have seen invented so far for a wartime situation. But, if a nation was trying to conquer another a nation it could potentially just use the Internet and over 25 or 50 years conquer any nation on earth potentially without firing a shot. This is my assessment of the real danger of the Internet worldwide to the survival of all democracies.
So, one of the direct results of the existence of the Internet might be the eventual end of all democracies by malware affecting voting in all or most democracies by causing bogus election results which might cause rioting of the people and revolutions and eventual dictatorships taking the place of those democracies all around the world.
We must all find a way to prevent this outcome by keeping our national security intact by keeping privacy intact for all law abiding citizens so this information doesn't get into the wrong hands and end our democracy.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
