This is a really classic movie and "yes" there really were people like this who hadn't been to much or any school in the south. It's a completely different world there today. But, this is a different time likely in the 1930s.

I was born in 1948 but I still met people a little like in this movie out of the south. They were pretty funny to me as a child but also very endearing as people because of the suffering they had been through in their lives and usually had mostly never been to school. But even in the 1950s a lot of people didn't graduate high school. Even though my Dad was valedictorian of his high school class in Seattle I almost dropped out of High School in my senior year. My parents talked me into going to a private school in Santa Fe New Mexico instead which was great fun in the snow during the winter. Since I was raised in Los Angeles I didn't ever see snow outside my own house growing up except before i was 4 years old in Seattle.
