I noticed a lot of people reading this article from 2013 so I thought I would re-post it here again. My thought is that a singularity is a type of complete change where all known variables of change are not predictable after that in ways that existed before as common sense among human beings. So, likely when a singularity occurs people would not notice it because they wouldn't know what to look for? However, it is sort of like a tsunami that will sweep over all of us whether we know what to look for or not.
My thought is that algorithms applied to technology could give us as humans hints about when it is occurring. However, that still wouldn't give us hints about what to actually do about it.
From the point of Singularity like a 100 foot ocean wave crashing upon a coastal city it might be completely unpredictable whatever was going to happen next to human society, to genetics, to governments, to corporations, to education, to jobs worldwide, to mental and physical health worldwide etc.
So, the singularity might be a friend to some and an enemy to others or a friend to all or an enemy to all. However, identifying what it is doing or will do might be impossible in the short or long run because there is nothing to compare it to in thousands of years of human history.

80% probability that the Singularity will occur between 2017 and 2112
Kurzweil predicts the singularity to occur around 2045[6] whereas Vinge predicts some time before 2030.[7] At the 2012 Singularity Summit,
Stuart Armstrong did a study of artificial generalized intelligence
(AGI) predictions by experts and found a wide range of predicted dates,
with a median value of 2040. His own prediction on reviewing the data is
that there's an 80% probability that the singularity will occur between
2017 and 2112.[8]

Technological singularity
My thought is that the Singularity started happening when the microprocessor chip was invented in the 1970s which allowed Apple 1 computer, TRS-80 from Tandy and Radio Shack and various other home microprocessor chips were used as a base or kit for home based computers. Then when you add to this Globalization because of the mass use of the Internet, cell phones and Smart phones. Then it became possible for literally every child with a smartphone on Earth to have more access to information and more quickly than President Clinton did when he was President.
I think this last statement about kids with smartphones might be the first or last event that signaled the "Singularity" in some ways is already here. Because when knowledge can spread instantly to every person on earth that can read or write or use a Smartphone then I believe the Singularity is already here. Just like when the Wright Brothers first flew their motorized plane at Kitty Hawk, "The Age of Flight" was here that spread worldwide by the 1930s and 1940s. We are in a similar situation now to maybe 1920 in regard to flight as we are to the Singularity so completely changing everything that no one will mistake any future day from any past day any longer.
Now, is that a good thing or is that a bad thing? IT depends on the person what this answer will be. But, unless we ask this question we might not be around to experience it and to make the world of the Singularity a world we all actually want to live in.
I view the Technological Singularity as a geometric progression turning into (at some point) a quantum progression that begins to change literally everything on earth.
However, most people won't know when that moment occurs. Even the President of the United States or the most sophisticated software engineers on Earth might not know when that "Tipping Point" is reached. Also, likely no one would know if this is a good thing, a bad thing or both, sort of like the first time a nuclear bomb was tested in Nevada. People were just scared then. But, who would actually know when the "moment" the singularity occurred. We might not even know until it was too late to change any of the outcomes.
This is why the more all of us are involved now in this process, the more likely it will be an outcome we all can live with.
Because at present my feeling as an intuitive is that the "Singularity" could occur from the present to 2017 more than this moment I'm talking about would occur in 2045. What Kurzweil is talking about in 2045 is when it directly affects literally all life on earth. But the tipping point could be "Right Now".
