Turn on your location services to find out where you are
If this comes up on your cell phone just remember that if you do turn
this on, not only you know where you are then but also anyone you might
not want to know where you are(people you don't know that might harm you
or your family) might know too now or eventually online. So, what I do
is to only turn location services on on a cell phone or Ipad when I
really need to know where I am if I am in new territory I'm not familiar
with. (Of course you could always buy a map and never turn it on).
Otherwise, I leave location services off. However, because of E911 all
your photos likely will have the full GPS Location embedded in the data
stream that the photo is composed of even with location services off on
newer phones. So, if you publish a smartphone photo with this location
embedded on the Internet somewhere, don't be surprised when someone
breaks into your home and steals from you or harms you. Since it doesn't
look like you can turn geotagging off on newer cell phones anymore it
is not a good idea to publish photos taken where you or your family live
or where you work online from your cell phone or any separate digital
camera where geotagging is left on. However, if you are just traveling
or hiking somewhere then that likely doesn't matter as long as you
aren't publishing online photos of where you are this moment.
Also, even with location services off, even with your cell phone turned
completely off, even with the battery out of your cellphone, your GPS
location could still be known by someone if there is a capacitor built
into the small motherboard of your phone for a couple of days or so if
it powers the GPS locator.
