If the answer to this question is: "YES" then the western world's involvement becomes problematic on a variety of different levels.
However, if the western world's involvement is the protection of religious minorities and non-religious minorities then I think the world will understand this better.
But, it is now getting so complicated over there that confusion on any and all levels regarding what the truth is (at least for the people there) likely is going to get worse and worse over time, especially with so many PTSD walking wounded who could wind up in Europe and the U.S. mentally confused and murdering people and themselves in their confusion.
However, it might be important to note how many Viet Nam Veterans came home also only to kill themselves, their friends or their significant others and their children. This might make people understand that seeing a lot of war and death makes at least 25% of the people who witness this temporarily or permanently crazy and uncivilized any longer.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
