Beach 69: of the Hapuna Beach system on the Big Island of Hawaii

Beach 69 was only about 10 minutes or so away from where I was staying. So, I generally had the best experiences here snorkeling because it was so easy to get here. We went here at least 5 or 6 times while we stayed on the Kona side of the big island. Some days it was too rough for good visibility and other days it was perfect. However, because I'm in my late 60s I took a boogie board with a leash which saved my life at least once when a wave hit me in the face and I swallowed water so I could hang onto my boogie board and be able to recover and not just drown from coughing up and swallowing water. Even if you are snorkeling you still have to watch out for rogue waves when you are on the surface coasting around.

The nicest part was that the water was 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit even in January and the air temperature was about 75 to 80 as well. And lots of sea life to see as well.

I was able to buy a boogie board for around 26 dollars from Costco in Kona which likely is less than it costs to rent one for the 10 days I was there. Then I left it with friends who eventually left it with a friend that lived there on the island so everyone was happy.

Also, if you have a Costco card, gas is about 1 dollar less per gallon there too.
