As you can see this gentleman is stepping out from Two Step.
If the surf is low like you are seeing here it is pretty safe.
However, when I did it in the next day or two it was 5 feet surf which was a little scary.
The water in this picture covers the first step of lava you step on to get out. His top foot is on the second step and his bottom foot is on the water step. This is safe what he is doing.
However, the next day or two when I went out here, going out was easy because you just wait for the 5 foot surf to splash and then when it starts to go out you jump in.
However, when I came back to try to get out it was very difficult. I didn't get hurt and didn't see anyone else get hurt that day. But I did see people washed up places they didn't want to be with surprised looks on their faces. But, I saw no blood or bruises that I could see that day.
However, a friend of mine got a "Pele Tattoo" across his back where his belt goes so it is completely black and blue across his back from left to right from getting slammed up against the lava by waves.
ON a calm day this is one of the best snorkeling spots with the most life on the Kona side of the Big Island.
