Long Description:
There are not too many plaques or signs that commemorate the flood of the winter of 1995. The story behind the Carmel River Bridge washout deserves a special place though.

Record rains that winter brought all major rivers in the area to flood stages. For three days, the Monterey Peninsula was cut off by land route due to the flooding of the Salinas River to the North, and here at the Carmel River. Luckily the heavily fortified bridge across the Salinas River withstood the raging water, but the usual tranquil Carmel River brought the highway 1 bridge down at this point.

The National Guard was called in, and a temporary Murphy Bridge was erected when the river got low enough to make working conditions safe. Plans were quickly drawn up, and construction of a new bridge, which how stands slightly East of the original, was begun.

The plaque reads:

"Dedicated in 1996 to the residents of Mission Fields area whose homes and businesses were flooded twice during the winter of 1995 and to the spirit of community and cooperation among government, private industry, and citizens that made possible the rebuilding of the Carmel River Bridge in just 34 days after the devastating floods of March 1995."
