Like Donald Trump himself tweeted in 2012, "The Electoral Vote is a Disaster". He was right because many states have all sorts of different rules as to what the electoral vote is.
For example, If the electoral vote was based upon the popular vote both Gore and Hillary Clinton would be presidents, Gore in 2000 and Hillary Today would be the President Elect because they by far won the popular vote.
This is one of the many reasons people are out demonstrating how corrupt our political system is now. Many states deny the right to vote to any minorities and make it so hard for them to vote that they might have to wait 5 hours or not be able to vote at all because of rules used to prevent minorities from voting. Then they compound this problem by changing the rules of how electoral votes are given.
IN this way Trump's victory is not a victory at all except for the racists and white nationalists who changed the rules in many states to reflect the loss of white votes nationwide because every month there are less and less white people compared to other races and nationalities.
