Often it is a lot like the Opening of a flower in the sun which means you cannot force a flower to open. It does so in it's own good time. So a part of spiritual unfoldment is patience.
I remember being 15 to 30 years of age and wanting to be fully enlightened "RIGHT NOW!" and being very very frustrated with all this "Patience" stuff.
But, the truth is, looking back now that if I had moved any faster than I did through spiritual evolution I would likely have gone insane. As it was it was very difficult at times when certain senses opened up.
I find the experience being a lot like being a chick in an egg and when you crack through the shell you find yourself in an entirely new universe with entirely different spiritual and physical rules you must follow.
And this has happened to me 10 to 100 times since I was 20 where suddenly I broke through the shell into a whole new universe of awareness and much more was expected of me by God and the universe than before.
So, with spiritual unfoldment also comes greater responsibilities to all life everywhere. And if you misuse those spiritual gifts and responsibilities, YOU DIE suddenly or within a few weeks time.
This is the truth about spiritual growth, spiritual responsibility and spiritual unfoldment.
