Romney smells Trump's weakness which is getting worse every day the government stays shut down and held hostage to his campaign promise which the Democrats are NEVER going to give in to. Over time Trump will either have to re-open the government 1, 2, or 6 months from now or he will just get weaker and weaker in everyone's eyes in every party.
Meanwhile the Things Romney is saying are hitting home with many Republicans, all Independents and some or all Democrats.
Remember Nixon ran against president Kennedy in the 1960 presidential elections then after Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 and Johnson, Kennedy's vice president was re-elected once during the Viet Nam war Nixon then won in 1968 and 1972 as president before he had to resign. So, Romney could win against Trump because Trump has no idea what he is doing.
And many Republicans and independents already understand this.
