Are mushrooms from outer space? | Explore Big Sky
Because of this they are more similar to humans and animals it appears than plants. This changes a lot how I have always viewed mushrooms by the way. I remember a friend telling me that a type of mushroom we were picking from a friends front yard in Palo Alto were good to eat when I was in college. But, I also remember being scared that he was wrong and that we might die. But, then again we all do a lot of really crazy things in college don't we?
But, luckily he was right. It was an edible harmless mushroom that we were grazing on on someone's front lawn back in likely 1969 or 1970.
Since then I have walked through the forests around mt. Shasta and have gathered morels which likely are my favorite edible mushroom fried in butter on the stove. There are others but when we get too exotic I worry a little that friends are accurate in the mushrooms they choose to pick in the forest.
I know Morels for example, because there aren't any other mushrooms that look that much like them so I feel safe if I find morels. But, over the years there are just so many people out there that have picked the wrong mushrooms and they died around the world. So, I'm still leery of picking mushrooms in the woods if they aren't Morels even now.
Here are some pictures of Morels (but even with these pictures don't go gathering mushrooms unless you are with an expert so you don't have problems like dying).
