I started watching Barry with Bill Hader from SNL as the lead and I think he is one of the writers and producers and sometimes the director of this series as well. It is a very dark comedy only getting darker in the 2nd season.
In Barry we have an Afghanistan marine veteran who is basically a good person who is a complete survivor. You know this about him that he has incredible survival skills that he has learned well. It would be hard for anyone to compete with him he has learned survival skills so well.
One of his skills is the ability to appear to be normal. Most people cannot do this but some can. So, when he is in danger he isn't much different than when he is not because he has this skill inherent in his nature.
So, you have this good natured person who has been trained to be a trained killer and who got a lot of praise from other soldiers whenever he killed the enemy. Now he has returned home with obvious PTSD from killing and nearly being killed in Afghanistan in two tours as a U.S. Marine there.
So you have this consummate survivor, Barry, who is going to survive whether anyone around him does or not, (because this is both his nature and his training as a marine), and you have all sorts of basically clueless people around him regarding ultimate survival which he has already faced.
So, it's like Barry is still at war in Afghanistan and the Americans (actors and police) around him are all completely vulnerable to his compassion and ruthless behavior.
IF you don't get that Barry is likely going to survive everyone around him whether they do or not then you don't get who Barry really is. And Sally is with someone like she was with the first time, Sam, but doesn't know it yet and might not ever the way the series is going so far.
Could someone like Barry exist in real life?
Of Course.
That's why this series is so funny in some ways.
Because you might meet a real Barry (or be driving next to a "Barry") in your car almost any day driving down the road.
IF people are nice to Barry they will live but if they cross him and threaten his survival or his friends survival or his girlfriend Sally then they are gone. This is an amazing character study of someone who has been successful in Battle in Afghanistan or Iraq or Syria and who is likely to survive almost anything because of their basic nature combined with their training and experience.
Because of this: the Tibetan Statement holds true here as well of "Be Kind to all beings, because Enemies often become friends and Friends often become enemies over time."
Because you never know when you are going to meet a Barry and if you meet a Barry you want him to be your friend and not your enemy. Barry's enemies are all dead you notice.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
