This has already happened thousands to millions of times already throughout this galaxy let alone others as well regarding humans or humanoids like us. Different species prefer different types of environments which could be even the exact opposite of what humanoids need.
When people say:"We are the first to develop space travel I have to laugh about this." Because this likely is the 10th time we have developed space travel on earth after losing the capacity to do this by wars, ecological disasters, political disasters, etc.
You need enough technically educated that are not killed in wars or technological disasters or weather disasters etc. to maintain and develop space travel in any form. And when this capacity is lost sometimes it takes thousands of years to get it back like this time with us.
