Long before World War II was underway, the Jewish people were fleeing Germany and its surrounding countries as fast as possible. However, at the time no one knew just how monstrous Hitler was being and almost every country to which they migrated didn’t want them there. In 1936 America was still in the middle of the Great Depression, and many citizens believed that an influx of refugees would place a strain on the economy to which we could never return. Philosopher Hannah Arendt described the plight of the Jewish refugees as such:
The refugees] were welcomed nowhere and could be assimilated nowhere. Once they had left their homeland they remained homeless, once they had left their state they remained stateless; once they had been deprived of their human rights they were rightless, the scum of the earth.
