Troops serving in Guam during World War II spent nearly 20 days fighting the Japanese in order to gain control of the island after it was taken from them in 1941. It wasn’t just American men fighting to take back Guam, but there were American dogs putting paws on the ground too. First Lieutenant William R. Putney acted as both the commander of the Dog Platoon and the veterinarian for all war dogs on Guam.

Dog platoons were deployed to find snipers and traps on the island along with searching out foxholes and delivering messages for their human counterparts. During the Guam operation there were 350 war dogs in the territory, and when American forces took back the island 20 dogs were wounded and 25 lost their lives.
